This week in class we were tasked to create a project based on the theme of "Cowboys" in Daniel and Smitherman's "How I Got Over". Below is my assigned group's interpretation of the prompt. We had a lot of fun completing this project, and we learned a lot about our history!

To describe what African means to me would mean writing for hours. Since I began forming thoughts and understanding words, my parents taught me the importance of knowing where I came from. They were Pan-Africanists, Rastafarians. When they spoke of Africa it always felt like they were talking about a mythical place, a fairytale, because no place could be that beautiful or that perfect. They taught me about the first people, and the creation of life beginning in Ethiopia, this way, I always knew that everyone was African. Africa to me means home, and it means divinity. The undeniable pull that Black people across the diaspora must feel when traveling back to Africa is something that I must experience.

Africa to me is strength, and determination. Though many of our ancestors were ripped from the continent, we refuse to forget our origins. Though Africa was pillaged and some parts remain colonized by Europeans, it still thrives in arts, culture, and resources. It's royal all in it's own.
